The winning submission for NYC HPD’s Inwood RFP, La Ostra will provide 625 affordable apartments (224 for seniors and 401 for families and individuals) as well as a publicly accessible waterfront park along the Harlem River. With strong partner organizations like Billion Oyster Project, BioBus, Life is Precious and NPower the development will offer other community amenities, programs and services including a marine science and STEM education center, a new indoor-outdoor field house, and suicide prevention and mental health services.
Designed to be Passive House certified, the development includes regenerative design components such as algae panels, rooftop solar, water turbines and a sand battery. Strategies to mitigate embodied carbon and enhance resiliency particularly around flooding and heat are also priorities. In addition to MAP, the design team comprises terrain-NYC, Jordan J Weber, and +LAB architect.
