The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) purchased this existing commercial building at the corner of East 172nd Street and Southern Boulevard in the Bronx with the intention of renovating the two top floors and upgrading the exterior while maintaining existing tenants at the first and second floors. Magnusson Architecture and Planning, PC (MAP) was the core and shell architect for the exterior renovation and building lobby as well as new elevators and mechanical systems. Work included replacement of all brick along the two street facades and a new corner opening at the top floor, as well as a new canopy and tile cladding along the street front.
MAP’s façade and lobby design gives new liveliness and public presence to a formerly drab building, extending the visibility of CAS services in their “South Bronx Hub”. The small lobby is made welcoming with natural and durable finishes and new lighting, giving access to new pediatric clinics above.
