With over a 1,000 cars parked on a four square block site, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) recognized the real estate value of developing an underutilized site that would yield much needed housing, retail, community use, parking, and public open space to the Flushing, Queens neighborhood. In response to a Request for Proposals, Magnusson Architecture and Planning along with Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK) developed a master plan with the Flushing Centre, as the focal point of the project. Designed to accommodate community activities, as well as being a comfortable public gathering place for all people, the new town centre provides a multi-use community facility, 68,700 square feet of retail space, and three mixed-use residential buildings with 180-units each and 1,500 spaces for indoor public and private parking.
Rooted in the street and block framework of downtown Flushing, the Flushing Centre offers the local community a new public open space enlivened by landscaping and fountains. The Centre extends existing pedestrian pathways within the neighborhood to the retail and community facilities to bring people and businesses together every day.
