The proposed Greenpoint Hopital Senior Housing redevelopment is designed in response to the community's desire to retain site's existing 1930's Greenpoint Hospital building. To that end, a modern addition has been designed to integrate the existing building into the new project. The gut renovation of the existing building will combine with a dramatic 8-story addition for 103,000 square feet of space and 90 units of senior housing as well as a PACE senior center, a community facility and open space.
In this scheme, our first consideration was to address the site's existing building. We decided to re-use it by means of a gut restoration-renovation and two new additions: one new building attached on the west side and a new community facility filling the courtyard on the ground floor and providing a landscaped outdoor deck-roof garden at the 2nd Floor. The addition will have a new, modern language, emphasizing the dialogue between the old and the new, thus providing new life to the vacant structure.
