Designed in tandem with it's 'sister' building located across the street, the Orion represents a gateway to the Melrose Commons community in the Bronx, New York. Designed to encourage home-ownership in the neighborhood, the 61-unit, 9-story affordable housing condominium building encompasses 81,231 square feet and will be the first building of its type in the South Bronx.
Magnusson Architecture and Planning chose three colors of exterior brick to delineate the base, middle and top of the building, while still harmonizing with the existing palette of the emerging surrounding neighborhood. The large windows at the top bring a lighter quality to the mass as the building meets the skyline. Inside, the building’s lobby offers a palette of such warm materials as slate and wood, while the corridors are filled with daylight from the large windows.
