500 East 165th Street is a new, 128-unit, mixed-use residential building on the corner of Third Avenue and East 165th Street in the Bronx, NY. Funded through NYS DHCR, units in 500 East is affordable to residents making up to 60% of AMI.
The major urban design goal for 500 East 165th Street was to respond to the existing neighborhood fabric. To take advantage of both the site’s location on the corner of a major Bronx thoroughfare, MAP designed a special expression at the building’s corner that responds to the larger scale of Third Avenue. Additionally, because of the site's slope, MAP designed a dramatic lobby. Partially double height with windows in the front and back of the building, the lobby visually and physically connects the basement and ground floor levels as well as the street and courtyard.
The building contains a combination of studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units. Residents of these units will have access to laundry and community rooms which open onto the rear yard. There is landscaped outdoor spaces at two levels that include a play area, 24 resident parking spaces available on site and approximately 4,500 square feet of commercial space on the 1st Floor.
